“Hello. Could I have some house lights up, please.
Hello everyone. First of all, thank you whoever organised the pink things. They
look wonderful. How are you feeling at the top? Good. Now, we have a yawn, we
have someone who’s sleeping, so could we be very quiet, could we be very very
quiet for a second. So, you’re asleep. How old are you? She’s almost two. [crowd
awwws] SHHH! [quietly] A name? Skala? Skylar? Scarla? Scar….la. Like a scar on
my face, with a la. Scarla. Oh, Starla. Wonderful name. Do you want to put her
headphone things back on? She’s fast asleep, which usually I would find VERY
offensive, but considering she’s almost two, I’m gonna let it slide. Hi,
Starla. Are you having a nice time?….aaaaand, she’s yawning. [indistinct] I’m
gonna sing another song for you now, and ah….[crowd gets noisy] shhhh, she’s
asleep….and if you know the words, please do join in. This one…we’re gonna
consider it a lullaby tonight. This is for Starla. I wrote it in 2015.”
“May I read this sign? The sign says “because of you I’m coming out
tomorrow.” There’s two things wrong with this sign: one, it’s because of YOU
you’re coming out tomorrow; two, you just came out! So you’re coming out
today! How do you feel?!”
DENVER, Colorado 3rd July
“Almost a month to the day after the Supreme
Court ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake celebrating
a same-sex wedding, Harry Styles ran across the stage of the Pepsi Center in
Denver, Colorado, holding a rainbow pride flag. This is a state that
narrowly voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election; besides metropolitan
pockets of blue districts, the city is surrounded by deeply red communities,
including Weld County and Colorado Springs, which is considered one of the most
conservative cities in the country. It’s somewhat surprising, then, to see a
young pop star make such a bold on-stage political statement in such a divided
state, in a divided country.” (Esquire)
“Let’s be clear, this is not a man using the pride flag as some sort of
easy branding alignment; he’s someone who supported LGBTQ rights since his days
in One Direction, once the biggest pop bands in the world. He fought against
the Westboro Baptist Church, he supported queer trio Muna on tour, and he
sings, on “Medicine,” what many consider to be a bi-sexual anthem: “The boys
and the girls are here / I mess around with him / And I’m OK with it.” During
pride month, Styles waved around a "Make America Gay Again” flag.” (Esquire)
“He’s a heartthrob, a fashion icon, a former boy
band superstar, a 24-year-old kid—someone who’s a tastemaker for an entire
generation. He’s a teen idol. And, by all accounts, he’s a really good dude.” (Esquire)
